More about

I was born in Aberdare in the South Wales valleys and grew up in Cardiff, where I attended the local comp., Whitchurch High School.

After reading theology at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, I was a Relay Worker with the graduate training volunteer programme for Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (Christian Union) working mainly with theological students.

During my MA at Oak Hill, I was also employed part time as a parish worker in a local church.

I taught RE, General Studies and PSE to bright but naughty school boys in a state grammar school near Southend on Sea.

I was a Ministry Apprentice at Emmanuel Church, Hastings, one of the 5% most deprived parishes in the country.

I trained for ordination and carried out post-graduate research into the doctrines of Scripture and the Lord’s Supper back at Oak Hill.

I was ordained Deacon in the Diocese of Chichester in 2007 and priest the following year, serving my title at Holy Trinity, Eastbourne, a church with an electoral roll of over 400 in the centre of town. During this time I was also chaplain to the Sea Cadet Unit.

I have been in my current parishes since 2011 with Dallington being added in 2012. I have been Rural Dean since 2014 serving 18 parishes with 12 clergy.

In 2017 I had a sabbatical which included a trip to Israel and some more writing and teaching.

In addition to these, other roles I have held or hold include:

  • member of the Chichester Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship Committee
  • Tutor on the Diocesan Living Faith Lay Discipleship Ministry Training / Reader Training Course and the Lay Ministers of Holy Communion course
  • Surrogate for Marriages
  • Member of Diocesan Synod
  • Member of Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee (East)
  • Leader on a Church Pastoral Aid Society Venture holiday summer camp for 11-14 year olds. I was treasurer and for eight years the main overall leader.
  • occasional speaker for Oak Hall Holidays and on their Bible Year Out Volunteer Scheme
  • Spiritual Director and Out of Parish Mentor to a training curate in the diocese
  • member of Diocesan Council for the Promotion of the Common Good
  • Member of the Parsonages Committee
  • Member of the Continuing Ministerial Education / Ministerial Development Review Working Group
  • leading a preaching group and lectured for the Sussex Gospel Partnership Ministry Training Course
  • Acting / Assistant Archdeacon

Interests – Academically, I am interested especially in church history and systematic theology (particularly the doctrines of Scripture and the Eucharist), mainly because my biblical languages are so poor!

I follow politics and enjoy walking the dog and reading (e.g. historical novels, biography). I sometimes like to cook something ambitious (by my limited standards!) on a day off and to eat it. I like a pint of ale.

My wife plays the piano and sings, and I sometimes get taken to improving concerts.

I go to the local history group when I can and follow the Welsh rugby team.
